Wolf Progress

After getting an awesome and thorough critique from Joel last week, I decided to design out of my comfort zone and reworked my wolf character. In addition to tweaking her design, I wanted to inject much more personality into her. My new 2d designs are bit more silly, telling the same story in a different tone. I will use the old design for the 3d version.

Some of these older images (color and turn around on blue) were from last week. The line drawings are my most recent work. I like the new personality I'm getting in the 2d design--it's also much quicker to draw. The following things can probably be vastly improved: proportion, simplified visual cues hinting at texture/patterns, consistency, tangents and pushing straights vs curves. Most of these drawings are definitely not my strongest work. Nonetheless, failure is apart of learning--and who can complain about drawing cartoons?

Animation/Illustration BFA gallery

Hi Everyone!

I've been working on the design/graphics of our BFA gallery recently and I'm excited to see it all come together. These are some of the samples from my designs.

We're cleaning, upholstering walls, rigging lights and working with culinary artists and technicians--working day and night...because we want YOU to join us for the opening of the Animation/Illustration BFA gallery at San Jose State University.

The reception is on May 3rd, in the Art Building, room 224. Please come! You won't regret having a great time ;)

out with the old, in with the new

Here are the last images for the Beehive project and some sketches for my new project. For Beehives, I'm most satisfied with the transformation sequences in which Eligio goes from monster to man, and Cinzia's bee attack. In Calvino's story, Cinzia is actually raped and murdered......SO I enjoyed the challenge of reinterpreting that violence into something more abstract as an attack from bees.

I do wish I could go back and solidify the style of lighting I was going for. I think harder edged lighting/shadows would have complimented this world more. The space for the environments and organic shapes on Eligio's back also could have been better figured out. Since all of the weaknesses have to do with design, for my next project I am working with pure design.

This new project is instructed by Joel Fajnar, an art director from Nickelodeon, who gave us the option of designing a wolf in sheep's clothing or a male rhino in women's clothing.

My story about a wolf in sheep's clothing, set in India with a Bollywood cabaret twist. She is a courtesan who charms and seduces her way through a flock of sheep to the maharajah ram. She holds back her appetite for the flock because she has a craving for male sheep--she is a ram eater. Meanwhile, her target ram is a self absorbed womanizer who abuses the female sheep in his flock. In the end, my wolf devours the ram and frees the female sheep because this story is ALL ABOUT STRONG WOMEN!

Currently, I am required to cater my designs towards 2d animation. However, I'd like to make it compatible for both 2d and 3d without sacrificing any interest or integrity in design. I was told my designs were too complicated to animate by hand, so I'll be refining and simplifying. I am referencing Hirschfeld and Hindu art.

House of Beehives

My new project is based on a short story by Italo Calvino, House of Beehives. I am challenging myself with a darker story this time around. It's about a traumatized man who fled WWII and became a hermit. He resides among bees and suffers the consequences of losing his last human relationship. Eligio, the antihero wears a gas mask, layers of brambles and travels with bees to distance himself from humans and look less human. Cinzia, his love interest eventually dies from an attack of bees. I decided to go with the crowlike shape for him because he is an outcast and felt that a poppy shape would be appropriate for her since bees are attracted to flowers. My goal is to tell a horror story in a poetic flat manner. I am looking at Hitchcock's The Birds and Charlie Harper.

Last bit of Zeitoun

Zeitoun is a project about a Syrian man who survives Hurricane Katrina and ends up rescuing people on a canoe. He is unjustly arrested as a terrorist in the story and has a past out at sea. Since race is a running theme in the story, I decided to address it literally by assigning people different colors. Zeitoun describes a close connection between his people and the ocean, so I decided to make him blue. I also thought it'd be interesting if his wife was pink and together, they had purple children.

This is the last bit of work I created for this project. There are mistakes to fix in every piece, but I will take what I learned and pay attention to it in my next project. I feel as though this project started out much stronger and stopped progressing when I caught a nasty long fever a week ago. Time doesn't wait and I'm ready to jump into the next project!
