Wonder Women

Travisty's Beard November post: Comic Book Heroes. I'm not a hardcore comic book fan...but when I was younger, I remember my only American female role model for a super hero was Wonder Woman. I was pretty bummed because I didn't really care for super buff flying men with deep voices and she was my only alternative. Now that I'm older, I have a deeper appreciation for her.

I've been keeping two sketchbooks this summer.

It's been a mix of painting, drawing and scrapbooking.

I collect framed insects and small taxidermy and decided to study my Mantis.

I like this spread because a very unhappy 'Wilfred' looks like he's shaming me, "Really? You stuck me here amongst these shitty drawings?" I did it for fun for my Art Director, Tim Lamb.

TimmyTom! My talented art director who I am learning so much from! So awesome he's tearing me a new one :D He currently had pink eye while spewing good advice, so I decided to draw him.

A sideshow act in the Barnaby at Outsidelands--lovely lady on a ten foot unicycle.

My new good friend, Francesco, who I sketch with in the city. He thinks I'm a monster :)

After moving back home, there was crazy mix of turmoil and inspiration. I was cleaning and discovered an old family photo. If it's not obvious, I'm the badass with the pink plastic cake that doubles as a keyboard.

After getting an awesome and thorough critique from Joel last week, I decided to design out of my comfort zone and reworked my wolf character. In addition to tweaking her design, I wanted to inject much more personality into her. My new 2d designs are bit more silly, telling the same story in a different tone. I will use the old design for the 3d version.

Some of these older images (color and turn around on blue) were from last week. The line drawings are my most recent work. I like the new personality I'm getting in the 2d design--it's also much quicker to draw. The following things can probably be vastly improved: proportion, simplified visual cues hinting at texture/patterns, consistency, tangents and pushing straights vs curves. Most of these drawings are definitely not my strongest work. Nonetheless, failure is apart of learning--and who can complain about drawing cartoons?

Animation/Illustration BFA gallery

Hi Everyone!

I've been working on the design/graphics of our BFA gallery recently and I'm excited to see it all come together. These are some of the samples from my designs.

We're cleaning, upholstering walls, rigging lights and working with culinary artists and technicians--working day and night...because we want YOU to join us for the opening of the Animation/Illustration BFA gallery at San Jose State University.

out with the old, in with the new

Here are the last images for the Beehive project and some sketches for my new project. For Beehives, I'm most satisfied with the transformation sequences in which Eligio goes from monster to man, and Cinzia's bee attack. In Calvino's story, Cinzia is actually raped and murdered......SO I enjoyed the challenge of reinterpreting that violence into something more abstract as an attack from bees.

I do wish I could go back and solidify the style of lighting I was going for. I think harder edged lighting/shadows would have complimented this world more. The space for the environments and organic shapes on Eligio's back also could have been better figured out. Since all of the weaknesses have to do with design, for my next project I am working with pure design.

This new project is instructed by Joel Fajnar, an art director from Nickelodeon, who gave us the option of designing a wolf in sheep's clothing or a male rhino in women's clothing.

My story about a wolf in sheep's clothing, set in India with a Bollywood cabaret twist. She is a courtesan who charms and seduces her way through a flock of sheep to the maharajah ram. She holds back her appetite for the flock because she has a craving for male sheep--she is a ram eater. Meanwhile, her target ram is a self absorbed womanizer who abuses the female sheep in his flock. In the end, my wolf devours the ram and frees the female sheep because this story is ALL ABOUT STRONG WOMEN!

Currently, I am required to cater my designs towards 2d animation. However, I'd like to make it compatible for both 2d and 3d without sacrificing any interest or integrity in design. I was told my designs were too complicated to animate by hand, so I'll be refining and simplifying. I am referencing Hirschfeld and Hindu art.

House of Beehives

My new project is based on a short story by Italo Calvino, House of Beehives. I am challenging myself with a darker story this time around. It's about a traumatized man who fled WWII and became a hermit. He resides among bees and suffers the consequences of losing his last human relationship. Eligio, the antihero wears a gas mask, layers of brambles and travels with bees to distance himself from humans and look less human. Cinzia, his love interest eventually dies from an attack of bees. I decided to go with the crowlike shape for him because he is an outcast and felt that a poppy shape would be appropriate for her since bees are attracted to flowers. My goal is to tell a horror story in a poetic flat manner. I am looking at Hitchcock's The Birds and Charlie Harper.

Last bit of Zeitoun

Zeitoun is a project about a Syrian man who survives Hurricane Katrina and ends up rescuing people on a canoe. He is unjustly arrested as a terrorist in the story and has a past out at sea. Since race is a running theme in the story, I decided to address it literally by assigning people different colors. Zeitoun describes a close connection between his people and the ocean, so I decided to make him blue. I also thought it'd be interesting if his wife was pink and together, they had purple children.

This is the last bit of work I created for this project. There are mistakes to fix in every piece, but I will take what I learned and pay attention to it in my next project. I feel as though this project started out much stronger and stopped progressing when I caught a nasty long fever a week ago. Time doesn't wait and I'm ready to jump into the next project!

I enjoyed how I wasn't worried so much about make them technically accurate, but rather letting the shapes and colors of the moment lead design.

These are revisions for the Part Time Indian Project. I got great feedback from Jake Panian and Zac Elsworth. There were awesome suggestions push some designs farther, but I decided it would fit better for my next project. Thanks guys!

Cinequest Film Festival Spot

For the past few weeks, I had the chance to work on a short film/commercial spot for Cinequest Film Festival directed by David Chai. It was really fun working in a team again and good experience for 2d pipeline production.

The first few images are concept work I designed inspired by UPA style short films. It was a challenge creating character ideations because they had to be general people from the bay area as opposed to a specific person with key characteristics. It was completely different from the way I'm used to working. Working in the UPA style was also incredibly fun! I experimented with breaking the rules--purposeful tangents, line/shape, texture...limiting my visual vocabulary to only a specific set of motifs and shapes.

We had a small team and very little time for turn arounds, so I was responsible for some of the backgrounds, while working with Kimberly Knoll, Wilbur Liang and Christine Nguyen. The animators designed the characters and the last images are color styling specific to the lighting of my scenes.

old BFG work

This was a group project assigned in Nino Navarez's class a year ago that taught me so much. There are definitely tons of mistakes in lighting and design. But I'm still very fond of the concepts behind our work. It would not have been possible without the collaboration of my awesome team mates, Fred Stewart, Alice Wong, Wilbur Liang.
I designed the BFG and his prop like things.
Fred Stewart, brilliant artist, designed all the mean giants.Wilbur designed the human characters except for Sophie, and Fred painted over them.
Alice designed Sophie, her various dos and frocks.

I designed the environment for Sophie's orphanage.
Fred was responsible for Giant Country, the story moment of BFG's visit as well as our version of the flesh-like snozzcumbers.
I had initially turned in a different story moment of the BFG fighting the other giants, but I wasn't happy with it. So I scrapped it and quick painted this and somehow never finished it.
Alice designed the dining room of the Queen's palace. I don't think I have a finished version of it.
I think this was supposed to be Wilbur's story moment. The BFG is savoring his first taste of human food. I was greedy and painted a version for myself.

I helped the animators customize a gift for Jason Spencer. We all wrote thank you notes on the blue tags. It was a good working with my hands again. :)

Part Time Indian

This is my most recent project in BFA. We were designing for Sherman Alexie's, "Absolutely True Diary of a Part Time Indian." It's about a boy who ultimately has to choose between a leaving the reservation for a better future and the tradition of sticking with his family and staying in the res. I want to thank Jason Spencer Galsworthy for giving me extensive feedback and Kendal Cronkhite for pushing me in the right direction, and last but not least, my professors Bunny and Courtney. Also, huge thanks to SHM alums Jeff Sengali, Dela Longfish, Nikki Lucas and Bob Mckenzie for kicking off the semester! There are definitely a few pages I NEED to revise, but here's what I had for the final. Will update when those are fixed :)

Board Track Racing

This is my most current project from BFA. It's set in the 1920's board track racing world. My team name was called the Iron Dragon, hence the winged bike. This is by far the most challenging project I've worked on. I made countless mistakes and had to revise many times. When I look back on it now, there's so much more I need to work on. As I learn more in vis dev, I've come to realize how much I really don't know.

In the midst of all nighters and absolute stress, Courtney Granner reminded me that it's a constant struggle to become a successful artist even though it always seems easier from the outside. It's worth all the sacrifice when I remember that I'm doing what I love.
